Focus on Microscopy 2006
Perth, Western Australia

Sunday April 9th - Wednesday April 12th, 2006

Dear Colleagues,

The next in the FOM conference series will take place in Perth, (western) Australia from Sunday April 9th to Wednesday April 12, 2006.

We are greatly honored by the fact that Robin Warren (left), together with Barry Marshall the 2005 winner of the Nobel Prize on Medicine and Physiology will participate in the opening symposium on Sunday evening 9 April. They are known around the world for their discoveries about the cause of peptic ulcers and they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for this work. The title of Warren's opening talk will be: "A Nobel Experience". For more information, click on button Warren/Marshall

Please note that the conference will take place in the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle, the historic waterfront suburb of Perth.

The conference will start on Sunday April 9, around 17:30 hours with the symposium with Barry Marshall in the Esplanade hotel followed by a welcome reception. The program of the conference van be found under the button program.

Focus on Microscopy 2006 is the continuation of a successful conference series presenting the latest innovations in optical microscopy and its applications in biology, medicine, material science, and information storage. 3D optical imaging and related theory are important subjects for the conference.

The FOM conferences are known for covering the rapid development of advanced fluorescence labeling techniques for the confocal and multi-photon 3D imaging of -live- 3D biological specimens. This year in addition special attention will be given to imaging in thick tissues, nanobiotechnology and medicine. Over its close to 20 year history the FOM conferences have focused on the developments and applications of light microscopy with an emphasis on sectioning -confocal and two-photon- microscopy. The conference series is as relevant now as at any time in its history as the scientific and engineering communities strive to meet the needs of a surging life sciences sector as well as respond to the sustained pressure on miniaturisation in lithography and data storage.

The 2006 meeting will be held in Perth on Australia's western seaboard. The conference will be held in the nearby port city of Fremantle, at the scenic Esplanade hotel, close to the boat harbour and Perth' famous beaches. Perth's relaxed and outdoor lifestyle should prove an ideal setting for a stimulating and enjoyable meeting - see you there!

A technical exhibition will be a feature of the conference. Information for 2006 Exhibitors can be found here. Opportunities for sponsorship of the conference can be found here.

Conference topics include:

• Confocal and multiphoton-excitation microscopies • Novel illumination and detection strategies - selectiveplane, extended depth of focus, 4pi, structured illumination • Fluorescence - new labels, fluorescent proteins, quantum dots, single molecule, excitation-emission spectroscopy • Time-resolved fluorescence - FRET, FRAP, FLIM, FCS • Coherent non-linear microscopies - SHG, THG, SFG, CARS • Scattering processes: Raman, light scattering spectroscopy, second harmonic • Multi-dimensional imaging • Sub-wavelength resolution - near field microscopy, total internal reflection • Laser manipulation, ablation and microdissection, photoactivation • Magnetic resonance and X-ray microscopy • Image processing and visualisation • Live cell and tissue imaging • Whole tissue imaging - optical coherence tomography, endoscopy, whole animal fluorescence • New tools in genomics, proteomics, phenomics, cytometry • Lithography and data storage

Abstracts of contributions for possible inclusion in the poster session can be submitted until two weeks before the conference date through the website www.FocusOnMicroscopy.org. Further information on the present and previous FOM conferences can also be found on this site. In particular the programs and PDF's of the contributions presented at the 2005 (Jena), 2004 (Philadelphia) and 2003 (Genova) conferences can be viewed in detail at this site under the History button.

Please note that an electronically available visa is required for conference attendants from outside Australia. For details see Visa requirement button.
